Neunginbojeon Hall Guardian Deities Painting of Jijangsa Temple
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a sinjungdo - a Buddhist painting of guardian deities - hanging in Neunginbojeon Hall of Jijangsa Temple, depicting all of the principal deities, including Jeseok (Indra), Beopcheon (Brahma), Cheollyong (the dragon kings) and the Vajra deities (Geumgangsin). It is painted in colour on silk and measures 153.2 cm wide by 137 cm high. Although the figures appear densely clustered overall, the composition follows an orderly three-tier horizontal arrangement. The unbalanced proportions of the figures, their stiff postures, and the heavy, murky colours together reflect well the general decline in the quality of Buddhist painting in the early 20th century.
