Yuje Dae Bowl of Beomeosa Temple
범어사 유제 대발 · 道光銘 鍮製 大鉢

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a type of brass vessel used as a rice container for communal meals at the temple. It stands 21 cm tall, with a mouth diameter of 44.5 cm and a base diameter of 27.5 cm. Two handle rings are attached to either side of the body, and an inscription is carved on the stand. The proportion between the height and the mouth diameter gives the piece an overall sense of stability. The outer surface of the bowl is raised into two bands, dividing the body into three sections. An inscription on the stand reading 'the 2nd (or 5th?) year of Daoguang' indicates that the bowl was made in either 1822 or 1825, during the reign of King Sunjo of Joseon. It is valuable material for examining an aspect of Buddhist ritual practice in the late Joseon period.
