Gangneung Royal Tomb Okcheon-dong Stone Pagoda Hall
강릉옥천동석탑재 · 江陵玉川洞石塔材

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is part of a stone pagoda. It was discovered in 1940 at a site traditionally known as the former grounds of Mujinsa Temple, an old Silla temple, and was moved to the grounds of Gwaneumsa Temple before being transferred to the Gangneung City Museum in 1992. There are two pieces in all: one is thought to be part of the upper tier of the stylobate, and the other appears to have been the first-storey body stone of the pagoda. The stone believed to be from the stylobate has pillar shapes carved at the corners and centre of each face, dividing it into bays, with a figure of one of the Palbusin (the Eight Legions, guardian deities said in Buddhism to protect the Dharma and guide the people) carved in each bay. The stone thought to be the first-storey body stone has pillar-shaped carvings at each of its four corners, with an image of the Buddha carved on each face.
