Seonbyeongmuk Old House, Boeun
보은 선병묵 고가 · 報恩 宣炳默 古家

This house was built in the 1940s and comprises an anchae (main women's quarters), a sarangchae (men's reception quarters) and a haengnangchae (servants' quarters). It is arranged with the sarangchae at the front, from which a central gate leads back to the anchae behind it. The sarangchae is a relatively large building, four and a half kan wide at the front and two kan deep at the side (a kan being the traditional bay unit of Korean architecture). Toe-kan, narrow extra bays, were added in front of and behind the main rooms so that the rooms could be made larger. An L-shaped toenmaru, a narrow wooden veranda, was also installed, both widening the usable space and serving as a passageway. In its approach to the anchae and in the extended function given to the toenmaru, the house shows a style that differs somewhat from the techniques of traditional hanok construction.
