This stele once stood at Hwasanseowon Confucian Academy, which formerly occupied this site. Hwasanseowon was built in 1578, the eleventh year of King Seonjo of Joseon, to enshrine the spirit tablets of, and hold memorial rites for, two great scholars of the early Joseon period, Yi Eon-jeok and Song In-su. Yi Eon-jeok served as magistrate of Jeonju and worked to instruct the people in morality and etiquette, while Song In-su, as governor of Jeolla Province, carried out honest and upright administration; each man had deep ties to this region. In 1658, the ninth year of King Hyojong, Hwasanseowon was designated a royally chartered academy, granted its name and patronage by the state, but it was torn down in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, under the order abolishing Confucian academies. Only this stele survives today, its inscription composed by Song Si-yeol and its calligraphy written by Song Jun-gil, testifying that this was once a hall of learning where scholars studied texts.
