A jangdae is a command post, a raised platform from which a commander would stand to issue orders. This command post, in Namseong-dong, Jinju, stands on a high hill at the north-western corner of Jinjuseong Fortress, a strategic spot commanding a full view of the area to the west and north. Standing at the highest point of the northern end of the inner wall, it allowed its commander to direct not only the area outside the fortress wall below the cliff, but also the troops stationed within the fortress and in the outer wall. In keeping with this role, its signboard also bore the names Jinnamnu and Gongbungnu. The Buk Command Post was damaged during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598) and was later rebuilt by Nam I-heung, a military commander (byeongma jeoldosa); it has since undergone several further repairs to survive to the present day. Among military buildings, it is a darakjip, a raised pavilion-style structure, dating to the mid-Joseon period, and it has served as a model for military buildings erected in later periods.
