Woljeongsa Temple is said to have been founded in the late nineteenth century, around 1880. The Geungnakbojeon Hall houses two Buddhist statues designated as cultural heritage material: a stone seated Buddha and a wooden standing bodhisattva. Stone Seated Buddha (Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Cultural Heritage Material): carved from stone, this statue stands 59 cm high. It has a large head in proportion to its body, and a low but stable-looking upper body typical of the late Joseon period. The hair is rendered in tight curls, and above it rises a high protuberance like a topknot, known as the ushnisha. Between the head and the ushnisha is a crescent-shaped ornament, a c髻珠-type jewel marking the topknot. The face is square and gazes straight ahead with a somewhat solemn expression. The robe covers both shoulders, and beneath it the figure wears an undergarment covering the abdomen below the chest, together with an outer robe. The undergarment is tied below the chest, but no knot is shown, only a thick band running horizontally across the chest. The left palm faces upward, while the right hand rests lightly on the knee; the left hand was carved separately and fitted on afterwards. Wooden Standing Bodhisattva (Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Cultural Heritage Material): this statue is 78.5 cm tall, and, apart from the crown, the entire body was carved from juniper wood. The head bears an elaborately decorated crown, at the centre of which is a small transformation Buddha, and the figure holds a lotus flower in its hand, identifying it as Avalokitesvara, the bodhisattva who saves sentient beings through compassion. The face is round, with narrow, elongated eyes, and the red-painted mouth carries a faint, compassionate smile. The figure wears a light, fluttering celestial robe, and the sash knot of the undergarment covering the chest is neatly arranged. Necklace-like ornaments at the neck, shoulders and legs add to the statue's splendour, strings of prayer beads hang long from both wrists, and the two hands together hold a lotus stem. It is a bodhisattva statue in which a gentle smile and lavish ornament sit in harmony.
