Seven Stars Painting of Jijangsa Temple
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This painting is kept in the Samseong-gak, the Hall of the Three Sages, at Jijangsa Temple. It measures 211.5 cm wide and 97.2 cm high and is painted in colour on silk. It depicts the Seven Star Spirits (chilseong) in personified human form, with the figures arranged symmetrically to left and right across the canvas in a horizontal composition divided into two registers, upper and lower. The loss of solemnity and divine presence in the figures, together with the stiff forms and lines and the muted, murky colouring, reflect well the Buddhist painting techniques of the early twentieth century.
