Daeungjeon Hall Bronze Drum of Beomeosa Temple
범어사 대웅전 청동북 · 梵魚寺 大雄殿 靑銅金鼓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA geumgo is a bronze percussion instrument used at Buddhist temples to summon the community or signal urgent matters. The Beomeosa Temple geumgo is a large example, 90 cm in diameter and 15 cm thick. Its rim slants inward toward the back, forming a narrow opening. The front bears only engraved concentric circles and is otherwise undecorated. Three rings are attached to the side, along with an inscription recording the date and circumstances of its casting. The inscription shows that it was made in the first year of the Tongzhi era, the thirteenth year of King Cheoljong of Joseon (1862). This geumgo is both a large example of late Joseon production and an important piece of evidence whose date of manufacture is clearly established.
