A hyanggyo is a national educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and various sages and to educate and morally guide the local populace. Hoedeok Hyanggyo was first built under King Sejong of Joseon (r. 1418–1450); after it was burned down during the Japanese invasions of 1592, it was rebuilt in 1600, the 33rd year of King Seonjo, and repaired in 1812, the 12th year of King Sunjo. The buildings that survive today are the Daeseongjeon, the shrine hall used for memorial rites, the Myeongnyundang, the hall used for study, and the Dongmu and Seomu, the east and west halls. The Daeseongjeon enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius and his disciples together with those of Korea's own sages. During the Joseon period the school received land, slaves and books from the state to support the teaching of students, but today its educational role has disappeared and only its function as a site of memorial rites remains.
