Gwanseong Tomb
관성묘 · 關聖廟

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis shrine honours General Guan Yu, familiar to us from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, worshipped here as a god of war; it is also known as Juwangmyo or Gwanjemyo. The worship of Guan Yu spread widely in Korea after the Ming general Chen Lin enshrined a carved image of Guan Yu at Nammyo in Seoul during the Japanese invasions of 1592. Gwanseong Tomb in Jeonju was built in 1895, the 32nd year of Emperor Gojong, on the proposal of Kim Seong-geun, the governor of Jeolla-do Province, and Yi Sin-mun, the military officer in charge of Namgosanseong Fortress, with the help of local dignitaries. Inside the shrine stands an image of Guan Yu, and on the walls to either side are murals depicting scenes from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. People who believe in Guan Yu's divine power visit the shrine at the start of each year to divine their fortune for the year ahead.
