This Buddha statue stands on a ridge extending eastward from Byeokdosan Mountain, west of Gyeongju. Byeokdosan, together with Seondosan Mountain to the west of Gyeongju, is one of the important mountains forming the western quarter of the city. The halo behind the Buddha was carved from the rock in the shape of a boat, without any further decorative carving. The statue itself was carved in relief, but it is so worn overall that its detailed features are difficult to make out precisely. On the head is carved a large topknot-shaped hair bun, and the thick, long neck bears three lines, known as samdo, the conventional folds marking a Buddha's neck. The robe covers both shoulders and falls from the chest to the knees in semicircular tiers, with the hem seeming to cover the ankles. The area beneath the feet is broken and cannot be confirmed, but it appears that no separate pedestal was made, and that the stone left over from carving the statue was used as its base instead. Judging by the overall carving technique, the statue appears to have been made after the unification of the Three Kingdoms.
