Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krIt was first established as a shrine to honour those who died in the second Battle of Jinjuseong Fortress during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598). It was founded by Jeong Sa-ho, and in 1607, the 40th year of King Seonjo, the king bestowed upon it the name Changnyeolsa (saaek, a name plaque granted by royal order). In 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, when the Daewongun's order abolishing private Confucian academies (seowon) led to the closure of Chungminsa Shrine, which had enshrined General Kim Si-min (1554–1592), victor of the first Battle of Jinjuseong Fortress, Kim was instead enshrined at Changnyeolsa. The shrine also honours 39 others, including the righteous army leader (changuisa) Kim Cheon-il (1537–1593), the Chungcheong army commander Hwang Jin (1542–1606), and the Gyeongsang Right Army commander Choe Gyeong-hoe (1532–1593). Kim Si-min was a military official of the mid-Joseon period who passed the military service examination in 1578, the 11th year of King Seonjo; when the Japanese invasions broke out, he defeated the enemy at the Battle of Jinjuseong Fortress and recovered several fortresses that had been lost. Kim Cheon-il was a civil official and righteous army commander of the mid-Joseon period. He was selected for office in 1573, the sixth year of King Seonjo, for his outstanding scholarship, and in 1593, the 26th year of King Seonjo, he assisted when Ming Chinese forces recovered Pyeongyang and advanced on Gaeseong. He strove to overcome the defeat of the first Battle of Jinjuseong Fortress, but when the fortress fell, he threw himself into the Namgang River and died a martyr. Hwang Jin was a military official of the mid-Joseon period who passed the military examination in 1572, the fifth year of King Seonjo, and died a heroic death at the Battle of Jinjuseong Fortress during the Japanese invasions. Choe Gyeong-hoe was a righteous army commander during the Japanese invasions who died at the Battle of Jinjuseong Fortress together with Hwang Jin and Kim Cheon-il.
