A chukseongpae is a tablet enshrined in a temple's seonbang (meditation room), before which monks prayed during their devotional services. It is embroidered, using techniques such as flat stitch and joining stitch, with silk thread on a plain, thick piece of silk measuring 33 cm wide and 47 cm long. A rectangular gold border surrounds a red ground; at the centre, the phrase "Namu Dalma Jonja" (Homage to the Venerable Bodhidharma) is embroidered in gold thread, and the area outside the border is worked in indigo blue. Flame patterns are embroidered in five coloured threads on either side of the inscription. At the top, lotus-petal patterns are embroidered in green and gold thread, and at the bottom, lotus patterns are embroidered over wave patterns in five colours. Although the workmanship is somewhat unrefined, it is an important source for examining the style of court embroidery.
