A hyanggyo was a national educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages, and to educate and morally cultivate local people. There is no detailed record of when Chilgok Hyanggyo was first built, but it is said to have been established in 1398, the seventh year of King Taejo of Joseon. The Daeseongjeon Hall was built in the early 17th century and was extensively repaired in 1907. What survives today are the Daeseongjeon Hall and Dongmu, used for memorial rites, and the Myeongnyundang Hall, used for education. The Daeseongjeon Hall measures three kan (kan being the traditional unit of a building bay, the space between two pillars) across the front and three kan to the side, and enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius, his disciples, and Korean sages. During the Joseon period, the school received land, servants and books from the state to teach its students, but its educational function has since disappeared, leaving only its role in holding memorial rites.
