A hyanggyo is a local Confucian school established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and various sages, and to educate and morally cultivate the people of the region. Jinjam Hyanggyo is said to have been first built in 1405, the fifth year of King Taejong of Joseon, and to have been rebuilt on several occasions since. It now comprises Daeseongjeon Hall, Myeongnyundang Hall, and the east and west dormitories (dongjae and seojae). Daeseongjeon Hall is three bays wide and two bays deep, with a gable roof that, seen from the side, takes the shape of the Chinese character 人 (meaning 'person'). It enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius together with those of sages of China and Korea. During the Joseon period the hyanggyo received land, enslaved labourers and books from the state in order to teach its students, but today its educational role has ended, and only its function of holding ancestral rites remains.
