Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDinosaurs is a general term for the huge reptiles, 5 to 25 metres long, that flourished from the Jurassic through the Cretaceous periods of the Mesozoic era. The Cheonjeon-ri dinosaur footprint fossils lie on a flat rock beside a stream and appear to be traces left by medium to large dinosaurs that lived around 100 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period. On the rock, around 200 dinosaur footprint fossils have been identified, including those of the large herbivorous dinosaur Hanoeryong (Ultrasaurus) and the medium-sized herbivorous dinosaur Goseongryong (Goseongosaurus), which belongs to the iguanodon group. Judging from the footprints, the dinosaurs do not appear to have moved in any fixed direction but to have wandered about freely, showing that this area was once part of their living space. What is notable is that, since dinosaurs are known to have lived on the broad plains, shallow rivers and lowlands of a subtropical climate, the footprints suggest that this area was once a savannah affected by tropical trade winds, where rainy and dry periods alternated. The Cheonjeon-ri dinosaur footprint fossils are valuable material for the study of Mesozoic ecology, and have been designated and preserved as Natural Heritage Material.
