Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the site associated with General Yi Ui-jeong, who died a martyr's death in the Battle of Jinjuseong Fortress during the Imjin War, the Japanese invasions of Korea. General Yi Ui-jeong (1555–1593) was the eighth-generation descendant of Yi Gyu-bo, a literary figure of the late Goryeo period, and passed the military service examination in 1583, the sixteenth year of King Seonjo. When the Imjin War broke out, he raised a militia and took part in the Battle of Jinjuseong Fortress in 1593, the twenty-sixth year of King Seonjo; when the fortress fell, he threw himself into the Seokgang River together with Generals Kim Cheon-il and Choe Gyeong-hoe and died for his country. His grave lies on the south-facing slope of the hill behind the place where he once lived, and his spirit tablet is enshrined at Chungnyeolsa Shrine in Jinju. The memorial gate was erected to honour General Yi Ui-jeong's loyalty and integrity. The spirit-path stele (sindobi), a memorial stone recording his life, was composed by Song Hwan-gi in 1796, the twentieth year of King Jeongjo, engraved by Gang Taek-jung, and erected in 1801, the first year of King Sunjo. The jeongnyeogak, a memorial pavilion granted by royal order to honour exemplary loyalty, was conferred in 1722, the second year of King Gyeongjong.
