Seated Wooden Buddha held at Woryeongsa Temple

This seated wooden Buddha is said to have originally been enshrined at a temple of the Beophwa Order (a Buddhist order devoted to the Lotus Sutra) in the Seosaga area of Jeju-si. According to the testimony of the temple's head monk, when that temple was demolished in 1982 the seated Buddha image, which had been left abandoned beneath the altar, was retrieved and brought here to be enshrined. It was kept and venerated with great care, like a hidden Buddha (bibul) concealed from public view, and was only recently investigated through the good offices of Kim Bong-ok.
