Mountain Spirit Painting of Jijangsa Temple
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a mountain spirit painting (sanshindo) hung in the mountain spirit shrine hall at Jijangsa Temple. It measures 95.5 cm wide and 121 cm high, painted in colour on a silk ground. Made in 1893, the thirtieth year of Emperor Gojong, its folk-painting-style depiction of trees, a waterfall and a tiger illustrates well the typical style of mountain spirit paintings from the late nineteenth century. However, unlike the vivid, decorative mountain spirit paintings typical of the period, it is unusual for its use of subdued, intermediate tones, and the depiction of the immortal's face, carrying dignity and refinement, stands out.
