Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of Kim Ban (1580–1640), pen name Sail, son of Kim Jang-saeng and younger brother of Kim Jip. He passed the sama examination and became a student at Seonggyungwan, but after the Gyechuk Treason Case broke out he gave up his official career, returned to his hometown, and spent ten years in seclusion studying. After the Injo Restoration, when Yi Gwal's Rebellion broke out, he escorted King Injo to Gongju. While the king was in Gongju, Kim Ban passed the special palace examination and rose through a succession of offices to become Deputy Minister of Remonstrance. When the Byeongja War broke out, he again escorted the king, this time to Ganghwado Island. He went on to serve as Inspector-General and as deputy minister of the Board of Rites, the Board of War and the Board of Personnel, and on his death was posthumously raised to the rank of Chief State Councillor. Jeonmin-dong in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, where Kim Ban's tomb lies, was the site of Jeongmin Station, a post station of the Joseon period, and the area contains the royally granted burial ground of the Gwangsan Kim clan. The burial ground also holds the graves of two wives, his eldest son Ik-nyeol, his third son Ik-gyeom and his grandson Man-jun, together with two jeongnyeomun — gates erected in a village to honour loyal subjects, filial sons or virtuous women.
