진주 의기사 · 義妓祠

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krUigisa is a shrine built to honour Nongae, a righteous gisaeng (female entertainer), who avenged the nation by embracing a Japanese general and plunging with him to his death after Jinjuseong Fortress fell in the second Battle of Jinjuseong Fortress during the Imjin War, on the twenty-ninth day of the sixth month of 1593, the twenty-sixth year of King Seonjo, when 70,000 soldiers and civilians died defending it. In 1629, the seventh year of King Injo, scholars of Jinju carved the characters 義巖 (Uiam, meaning "Rock of Righteousness") onto the rock where Nongae had died, and in 1722, the second year of King Gyeongjong, they erected the Uiam Monument above it. In 1740, the sixteenth year of King Yeongjo, the military commander Nam Deok-ha (1688–1742) petitioned for royal commendation of the righteous gisaeng and, with the king's approval, founded Uigisa; the shrine was subsequently repaired and rebuilt three times. The present building was reconstructed in 1956 by the Uigi Changnyeol Society with donations from local citizens.
