Pagyesa Temple was founded in 804, the fifth year of King Aejang's reign in Unified Silla, and comprises a main hall, auxiliary buildings and several hermitages. The date when Sallyeonggak Pavilion, a shrine to the mountain spirit, was first built is not known, but it was rebuilt in 1976 and repaired again in 1979, giving it its present appearance. It is one bay wide and one bay deep, and viewed from the side its roof is a gable roof shaped like the character 人 (meaning 'person'). The bracket sets that support the eaves are carved at the tops of the columns in the shape of a bird's wings. The interior and exterior are decorated with elaborate coloured paintwork (dancheong), and paintings also cover the outer side walls. It is one of the shrine halls that arose from the blending of traditional folk belief with Buddhism, and it displays this fusion through its lavish decoration.
