Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDaejeokgwangjeon Hall refers to a geumdang, the main hall of a temple enshrining as its principal image Vairocana Buddha, the dharma-body Buddha. The Daejeokgwangjeon Hall of Seondeoksa Temple was begun in 1987 and completed in 1993. It is a two-storey timber building: the lower storey has five bays across the front and four to the side, and the upper storey three bays across the front and two to the side, with a total floor area of 197.48 ㎡. The bracket sets are of the dapo (multi-cluster) style: the lower storey has three outward and six inward bracket arms (chulmok), and the upper storey three outward and seven inward. The structural frame is of the two-high-column, seven-purlin type, the ceiling is a coffered (ujeong) ceiling, and the floor, shared continuously between the upper and lower storeys, is a wooden floor laid in a well (checkerboard) pattern. The roof is a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof. A distinctive detail of the brackets is that the ox-tongue-shaped supports (soeseo) are carved in floral forms, a decorative technique that becomes increasingly pronounced toward the late Joseon period. The principal image is Vairocana Buddha, flanked by Amitabha Buddha and Sakyamuni Buddha. At Seondol, where Seondeoksa Temple stands, monks in training have practised meditation since long ago. It is the place where Seon masters Ssangwol and Eungwol practised in the 1870s, and in modern times, from 1982, the eminent monk Goam oversaw the temple's reconstruction, funded by Jo Geun-ho. Although the Daejeokgwangjeon Hall of Seondeoksa Temple is thus of recent construction, it is the only two-storey timber geumdang among temple main halls on Jeju Island, giving it high scholarly value as a resource for research on temple architecture; it was accordingly recognised as necessary for the preservation of local culture and designated a Cultural Heritage Material.
