Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krIn the rear garden of Baehwa Girls' High School stands a tall rock face. On its left side the characters "Pirundae" are carved vertically, in the centre several lines of verse are inscribed, and on the right the names of nine people are listed. Pirun is the pen name of Yi Hang-bok, who once lived here. He served as daejehak (head of the Office of Special Advisors) during the reign of King Seonjo of Joseon, and lived so incorruptibly throughout his life that he was named one of the Cheongbaekri, officials honoured for their integrity. The inscription in the centre was composed and carved by Yi Yu-won, a descendant of Yi Hang-bok, after he visited the site and recorded his impressions, and the list of names on the right is thought to be of people connected with the building of Yi Hang-bok's house. Yi Yu-won's inscription was carved in the 10th year of King Gojong (1889), and the characters "Pirundae" are also thought to be in Yi Yu-won's hand rather than Yi Hang-bok's. The list of names on the right is believed to have been carved earlier, in either the 13th year of King Sunjo (1813) or the 10th year of King Gojong (1873). Although it dates from a later period, it provides valuable material for studying the calligraphy of Yi Yu-won, a noted calligrapher, and also holds important value as evidence of Yi Hang-bok's historical traces.
