This is a Buddhist painting enshrined at Hyewonjeongsa Temple, a palsangdo depicting the life of Shakyamuni Buddha divided into eight scenes. The eight scenes of the palsangdo are: Dosollae Uisang, showing Shakyamuni descending from Tusita Heaven on an elephant to the saha world; Biram Gangsaeng-sang, depicting Shakyamuni's birth through the side of Queen Maya in Lumbini Garden; Samun Yugwan-sang, the scene in which the crown prince observes the suffering of the people outside the palace gates and feels the impermanence of life; Yuseong Chulga-sang, depicting him leaving home to become a monk against his parents' wishes; Seolsan Sudo-sang, showing him practising asceticism with hermits in the snowy mountains; Suha Hangma-sang, in which the crown prince overcomes all manner of temptation and threat during his practice; Nogwon Jeonbeop-sang, showing the Buddha's first sermon at Deer Park; and Ssangnim Yeolban-sang, depicting the Buddha's death beneath the twin sala trees. This palsangdo consists of eight panels in all. It continues the tradition of coloured Buddhist painting of the Joseon period, and although there are traces of later partial retouching, the condition of all the panels is extremely good. The Hyewonjeongsa palsangdo continues the traditional iconography of late-Joseon palsangdo while showing some partial changes. In particular, it follows on from a line of iconographic works similar to the palsangdo held at Songgwangsa Temple and Tongdosa Temple, which were produced in the eighteenth century. Although the Hyewonjeongsa palsangdo was produced in 1925 and so belongs to the modern period, it is not only in good condition but, at a time when the re-examination and importance of modern Korean art is coming to the fore, it is also significant as research material on the continuation and transformation of the traditional iconography of eighteenth-century palsangdo, making it a meaningful piece of cultural heritage.
