This temple site, lying at the southern foot of Byeollipsan Mountain, is still called Woncheung-gol by local villagers, confirming that it is the site of Woncheungsa Temple mentioned in the Gangdoji (Record of Ganghwa). Judging from the stone remains scattered across the site, the temple is thought to have been fairly large in scale. No Buddha statue survives, but a large lotus-patterned pedestal remains, suggesting that a stone Buddha statue once stood here. A good number of stone pagoda members also remain, and in particular all of the roof stones of the stone pagoda survive; their three-tiered eave supports and distinctive technique clearly indicate that they are works of the Goryeo period. The temple is accordingly presumed to date from the period when the Goryeo court moved its capital to Ganghwado Island, as recorded in the Gangdoji, and the surviving stone pagoda and Buddha statue members are valued as important material for research into the Buddhist art of that time.
