Cheongdeoksa Temple, Goesan
괴산 청덕사 · 槐山 淸德祠

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis shrine enshrines the spirit tablets of Yi Bang-u, Grand Prince Jinan, the eldest son of King Taejo Yi Seong-gye, and of Lord Bongnyeong, the Grand Prince's own eldest son. Yi Bang-u (?–1393), aware that his father intended to found a new dynasty, withdrew to Haeju and lived there in seclusion until his death, after which he was posthumously granted the title Grand Prince Jinan. Built in 1831, the 31st year of King Sunjo, the building takes its name, Cheongdeok (meaning "pure virtue"), from the Grand Prince's reputation for integrity, and a plaque reading "Cheongdeoksa" hangs on the soseul-sammun, a three-bay gate with a raised central section. A wall encloses the gate, and a pond lies within the outer gate. The building measures three bays across the front and one and a half bays to the side, and has a gabled roof which, seen from the side, takes the shape of the Chinese character 人 (person).
