Standing Seoseohak-dong Stone Buddha
서서학동석불입상 · 西棲鶴洞石佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone Buddha depicts Sakyamuni Buddha in a standing posture. For a long time its body, apart from the head, lay buried in the ground; it was dug up in the 1970s and enshrined in 1980 in the Mireukdang Hall of Mireugam Hermitage, built that year. The statue has lost much of its original form, and the nose and hands are recent additions. It wears robes covering both shoulders (tongyeon), with drapery folds flowing in curves from both shoulders across the chest and arms down to the legs, and with long, drooping sleeves. Judging from its carving technique and the style of its lotus-patterned pedestal, the statue is thought to be a work of the Joseon period.
