Seated Stone Buddha of Jingwansa Temple
진관사 석불좌상 · 津寬寺 石佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis statue is a seated stone Buddha currently enshrined in the Chilseonggak Hall, the Hall of the Seven Stars, at Jingwansa Temple, and is carved from buddha stone, a jade-like stone. It is a child-like Buddha image (dongyeong bulsang), characterised by a round, youthful face, with the head rendered unusually large in proportion to the body. The hair is shown as nabal, tight snail-shell curls, with a low usnisha, and both the knob at the crown and the mid-knob are represented; the large, broad face bears small, delicately depicted features. In particular, a smile plays at the small mouth, which, together with the baby-like body, gives a friendly and gentle impression. The body is draped in monastic robes worn in the tonggyeon style, covering both shoulders, the hem tucked beneath an undergarment whose folds run in parallel across the centre of the chest. The hands are rendered unusually large and are placed neatly together on the knees. This statue is thought to be one of a set of a Thousand Buddha images, and Buddha statues of this same type are widely found in Gangwon State, Seoul and the northern Gyeonggi region. Although the face is large in proportion to the body overall, the stable, triangular posture and sculptural form show the characteristics of late Joseon Buddhist statues.
