A battery (dondae) is a watch post built at a place commanding a clear view along a border or coastal area, used to observe enemy movements and prepare against attack. It was usually raised on high, level ground, with the outer wall built up like a fortress wall and the inner side kept lower, where cannon were installed. The batteries on Ganghwado Island in particular were ordered built at various points by a court alarmed into strengthening coastal defences after the island fell during the Manchu invasion of 1636, the fourteenth year of King Injo. This battery is one of forty-nine built on the order of Kim Seok-ju, who was serving as Minister of War at the time, and it is also known as Geomam Battery. It was built with sections both rounded and angular, giving it a half-moon-shaped plan when seen from above. It was constructed in 1679, the fifth year of King Sukjong, when Yun Ije, the Governor of Ganghwa, mobilised the Eoyeonggun, a royal guard unit, to build it.
