Gonaesang Fortress Site
고내상성지 · 古內廂城址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis fortress site in Songjeong-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, was built in 1397, the sixth year of King Taejo, when the Jeolla-do provincial military garrison was established here; it fell out of use after the garrison was relocated to Gangjin Byeongyeongseong (Garrison Fortress) in 1417, the seventeenth year of King Taejong, and is also known as Gobyeongyeongseong, the Old Garrison Fortress. The Sinjeung dongguk yeoji seungnam records it as a stone-built fortress with a wall circumference of 1,661 cheok, showing that it was originally built of stone. Most of the wall has since collapsed, but place names connected with the fortress survive around Songjeong-dong: Gwangju Airfield was called "Seonganetdeul" (the fields inside the fortress), and the fields to the west of Gonaesang were called "Seongnomaetdeul" (the fields beyond the fortress wall). At the time of its designation as a Cultural Heritage Material, the surviving stretch of wall measured 170 m in length and 1.45 m in height, built up by tamping earth in even layers; this suggests that Gonaesangseong was faced with stone on the outside while the interior was built up with packed earth, but today only these ruins remain.
