This stone water basin remains at the site of Bomunsa Temple, where it once held water for the monks' use within the monastery. The exact date of Bomunsa Temple's founding is unknown, but the Yeonhyeokji, a record of history kept at Dosanseowon Confucian Academy in Tanbang-dong, Daejeon, states that monks from this temple were mobilised to help build the academy, suggesting that its Buddhist lineage continued down to the late Joseon period. Five building sites remain here today, together with the stone water basin, a gwaebuljiju (a pair of posts used to support a gwaebul, a huge Buddhist painting hung outdoors for great ceremonies), a millstone, and a washing stone, each still marking its former place. The basin is square in overall form, with its floor and each side finished flat. Holes are set into the bottom and into the upper section to drain off standing water; the hole in the upper section in particular is shaped like the spout of a kettle, calling to mind the beautiful curve along which water must once have flowed. It is presumed to be a work of the Goryeo period.
