Pasanseowon Confucian Academy enshrines and holds memorial rites for the Joseon-period scholar Seong Su-chim (1493-1563), together with his son Seong Hon, his younger brother Seong Su-jong, and Baek In-geol. It was established in 1568, and in 1650 it received royal recognition as a saaekseowon, an academy granted books, land and slaves by the king in acknowledgement of its standing. Pasanseowon also became a stronghold of the Seoin (Westerners, a political faction of the Joseon period), centred on the Giho Sarim, the community of Confucian scholars based in Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheong-do. The academy was burned down during the Japanese invasion of 1592 and rebuilt, then destroyed by fire again during the Korean War; only its shrine was restored, in 1966. A wall surrounds the shrine, and at the entrance stands a sotsamun, a three-bay gate in which the roof of the central bay is raised a step higher than those on either side. The shrine measures three bays across the front and two bays to the side, with a matbae roof that, seen from the side, takes the shape of the character 人, meaning "person." Pasanseowon is one of the forty-seven academies nationwide that survived Emperor Gojong's abolition of seowon academies, in 1871, when all but forty-seven seowon across the country, including those with shrines, were abolished.
