Hongcheon Yangdeogwon Temple Three-story Stone Pagoda
홍천양덕원삼층석탑 · 洪川陽德院三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krOriginally a three-story stone pagoda believed to date from the late Goryeo period, it was stolen in 2005, leaving only the base stone. Only the first-story body stone is a single piece; for the remaining stories, the roof stone of the story below and the body stone of the story above were each carved from one block, and the roof stones are badly damaged. Numerous roof-tile fragments have been found around the pagoda, suggesting the site of a temple, though nothing further has been established. A legend tells that when King Taejo (Yi Seong-gye) was travelling in search of a new capital, he passed through this place and, seeing that the shape of the land resembled a dragon, foresaw that disaster would soon befall it; he therefore built a temple and erected this pagoda at the spot corresponding to the dragon's head to ward off the calamity in advance. Another legend holds that if this stone pagoda is ever moved, disaster will befall the village.
