Standing Inhu-dong Stone Buddha
인후동석불입상 · 麟後洞石佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone Buddha is carved as a standing figure representing Maitreya, the Buddha who is to appear in the distant future to save all living beings. Part of the body is buried in the ground, and the severed neck has been rejoined with cement; the image is notable for its large head and thick cheeks. The robe falls in folds from the left shoulder down past the left arm, and the hands are shaped with the right palm placed against the chest and the left hand bent at chest height with the palm turned outward. According to tradition, the damaged right ear was struck off with a sword by a Japanese commander during the Japanese invasions of 1592. Judging from its carving technique, this Buddha image appears to date from the end of the Goryeo period.
