Gyeongju Gyo-dong Stone Lantern
경주교동석등 · 慶州校洞石燈

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone lantern is said to have been brought from the site of Heungnyunsa Temple. A stone lantern is generally built around a light chamber that holds the flame, with a three-tiered base below and a roof stone and finial above; this lantern, however, is unusual in having neither a light chamber nor a roof stone. A finial in the shape of a flower bud survives at the top, though it is tilted slightly to one side. The base consists of a square ground stone, on whose four sides are carved seated images of the twelve zodiac guardian deities. Above the ground stone is a shaft, and above that a pedestal carved to resemble a lotus flower rising upward. It is noteworthy that examples of stone lanterns with the twelve zodiac deities carved at the base are very rare.
