This is the courtyard stele of Geomdamseowon Confucian Academy, erected by later disciples of Song Jun-gil, pen name Dongchundang (1606–1672), to honour his scholarship and virtue, together with Bomanjeong, the pavilion that served as the academy's teaching space. Song Jun-gil was a civil official active under King Hyojong and King Hyeonjong of Joseon, and was deeply versed in yehak, the study of ritual propriety. Bomanjeong was originally built in 1669, the tenth year of King Hyeonjong, by Song Jun-gil at this site in Geomdam, where he intended to pursue his studies and spend his remaining years. In 1694, the twentieth year of King Sukjong, Geomdamseowon was founded to honour him, and from that time Bomanjeong was used as the academy's teaching space. When the academy was abolished in 1871, the eighth year of Emperor Gojong, Bomanjeong was lost along with it, but it was rebuilt in the early 1920s. Bomanjeong measures three bays across the front and three bays to the side. Inside there is a room, a wooden-floored main hall (daecheongmaru) and a narrow veranda floor (toetmaru), with a storage room behind the main room; this storage room once held the printing woodblocks for the collected writings of Dongchundang. The Geomdamseowon courtyard stele, standing in the middle of the front yard of Bomanjeong, consists of a base, a body stone and a capstone. It was erected in 1766, the forty-second year of King Yeongjo; the text was composed by Kim Won-haeng and written out by Song Myeong-heum, a great-great-grandson of Song Jun-gil. Bomanjeong clearly shows the character of a late Joseon teaching space, and architecturally it illustrates well the transition in style from the late Joseon period into the Japanese colonial period. The courtyard stele is historically valuable for recording the history of Geomdamseowon and the life of Song Jun-gil.
