Seated Yongjinsan Mountain Rock-carved Buddha
용진산마애여래좌상 · 聳珍山磨崖如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a rock-carved Buddha 1.17 m high, carved into the rock face to the left of the path leading to Cheongnyongsa Temple on Yongjinsan Mountain, in Saho-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. No pedestal or halo was provided; only the body of the Buddha is incised in outline. The oval face is flat, and the narrow gap between the thinly slit eyes and the eyebrows gives a frowning impression. The nose is large and broad in relation to the face, and its tip is damaged. The mouth is rather large, the tightly closed lips rendered thickly. The neck meets the shoulders directly, giving the impression that the figure is hunching its shoulders. The robe is barely indicated, appearing only faintly on the left shoulder. Judging from the hand gesture, with the hands brought together at the chest and the thumbs and middle fingers lightly touching, the figure appears to represent Amitabha Buddha. Both feet are raised onto the knees with the soles turned upward, the whole rendered almost entirely in outline with details omitted. On the rock face above the Buddha, the inscription Buldang Ilwol Yongjin Susu (佛堂日月聳珍水石) is clearly carved in a vertical line. Judging from its overall style, the statue is presumed to have been made in the late Joseon period.
