Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese artefacts were recovered from the tomb of Yi Chung-rip, the 12th-generation ancestor of Yi Chae-sik of the Hakseong Yi clan, in Jungchon village, Guyeong-ri, Beomseo-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan. Yi Chung-rip was a military official of the mid-Joseon period who won great merit during the Japanese invasions of 1592–1598 (the Imjin War). The objects were unearthed in 1986 when his tomb was relocated to make way for an industrial complex. Believed to date from the early 17th century, they had lain underground for more than 350 years yet were recovered without damage. The items include a myeongjeong (a banner inscribed with the deceased's name and rank, carried in the funeral procession), a sash for a po robe, a gu-ui (shroud wrapped around the coffin), various personal articles, a wide-toothed comb, a fine-toothed comb, a short sword, a knife sheath, a brush case, and fans. They are an important source of information on the clothing and accessories of the yangban (scholar-official class) of the period.
