This seowon (Confucian academy) enshrines the spirit tablet of Yun Hwang, a Joseon-period scholar, and holds memorial rites for him. Yun Hwang was renowned as an upright official who submitted a memorial urging resistance to the end during the Byeongja War, the Manchu invasion of 1636–37. He was also skilled in calligraphy and gained renown as one of the finest calligraphers of his day, and under King Injo he served in the post of magistrate (buyun) of Jeonju. Bangokseowon enshrines Yun Hwang's tablet at the centre, together with those of the Joseon scholars Yi Yeong-seon and Seo Pil-won. The academy was demolished in 1868, the fifth year of King Gojong, under the order abolishing seowon academies, and was rebuilt in 1878, the fifteenth year of King Gojong.
