Gwaeseok-ri Three-story Stone Pagoda
괘석리삼층석탑 · 掛石里三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a stone pagoda with a three-storey body set on a single-tier base. The body of the pagoda is formed from a single stone for the first-storey body, while the roof stone of the first storey together with the body stone of the second storey, the roof stone of the second storey together with the body stone of the third storey, and the roof stone of the third storey together with the finial base stone at the top, are each carved from a single stone. Pillar shapes are carved at each corner of the first-storey body stone, and the thick roof stones each have three-tiered eaves supports on their undersides. The pagoda displays the style of stone pagodas from the mid-Goryeo period onward. It is said to have been erected at Sutasa Temple during the Goryeo period, and a legend holds that when the authorities once tried to move the pagoda elsewhere, a tiger appeared and blocked the way, so that it could not be moved.
