The dinosaur footprint fossils found here appear to belong to dinosaurs that lived during the Early Cretaceous period, about 100 million years ago. These dinosaurs are known to have lived on river floodplains in a savannah-like region, under a subtropical climate marked by alternating wet and dry seasons and affected by tropical trade winds. Dinosaur footprints have been identified at several locations along the Daegokcheon Stream, but the fossil footprints at this site are the best preserved. They are impressed on a rock surface covering about 100 cubic metres and number around 24 in total, including footprints of a sauropod family (an estimated 60 tonnes) and footprints of an ornithopod family related to the iguanodontids, identified as the ichnogenus Goseongosauripus. The fact that they survive as trackways heading in a consistent direction suggests that the dinosaurs wandered peacefully through this area. The strata here belong to the medium grey, sandy mudstone beds of the Sayeon-ri Formation, Hayang Group, Gyeongsang Supergroup, and these dinosaur footprint fossils are valuable material for natural history research into the geological history of the Ulsan region.
