Yeonpung Local Office, Goesan

A hyangcheong was another name for the yuhyangso, an advisory body of the early Joseon period that assisted local magistrates. It oversaw public morals in the village, supervised local clerks, recommended village administrative officials, and advised on the assessment and distribution of taxes and corvée labour. Yeonpung Local Office was used as a police substation during the Japanese colonial period, and since 1963 it has served as the Yeonpung Catholic gongso, a small chapel without a resident priest.
