This is the tomb of Hong Yang-ho (1724–1802), pen name Igye, a civil official of the late Joseon period. He passed the jinsa examination in the 23rd year of King Yeongjo's reign (1747) and succeeded in the special state examination in 1752, afterwards serving as Jipyeong of the Office of the Inspector-General, Suchan of the Office of Special Advisors, and Gyori of the Office of Special Advisors. He later rose to the highest honours, holding such senior posts as Daesagan of the Office of the Censor-General, Daesaheon of the Office of the Inspector-General, and Daejehak (Chief Academician) of both the Office of Special Advisors and the Office of Royal Decrees. He oversaw several compilation projects, including the Veritable Records of King Yeongjo, the Gukjo Bogam and the Dongmun Hwigo, and he wrote the Mongmin Daebang, a guidebook for local officials. His other surviving works include the Yukseo Gyeongjip, the Goryeo Daesagi and the Dongguk Myeongjangjeon. Having travelled to China twice, he became renowned for his exchanges with eminent scholars there and made a major contribution to the adoption and spread of evidential scholarship. He was praised not only for his scholarship and writing but also as an accomplished calligrapher; the commemorative text for the ridge-raising ceremony (a text recording the start and completion of a construction project and the names of those who took part) of the north gate of Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon is in his hand. He died at the age of 79 and was given the posthumous title Munheon. He was buried together with his wife of the Jeong clan of Dongnae in a joint tomb. The joint tombstone was erected in the 32nd year of King Sunjo's reign (1832); the text was composed by his son Hong Ui-jun and written in calligraphy by his grandson Hong Gyeong-mo.
