Subukakgudang Hall
수북학구당 · 水北學求堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a place that produced many Confucian scholars during the Joseon period. It was founded in the fourth year of King Seongjong (1473) by three clans — the Park, Nam and Jin families — but was shut down after suffering damage from tigers. Later, in the thirty-fifth year of King Sukjong (1709), four clans — the Kim, Lee, U and Jeong families — built a new hakgudang, a local Confucian study hall, about 300 metres from the site of the original one. The present Subukakgudang building was rebuilt in 1966. It measures four bays across the front and two bays to the side, with a hipped-and-gabled roof that forms the shape of the character eight (八) when viewed from the side. Subukakgudang was a facility required for shaping the policies of the time, in keeping with the political and social ideology of the new dynasty.
