The building of Jungang Church on Seodo Island, Ganghwa, is a hanok (traditional Korean-style) chapel built in 1923 with donations from the congregation. In 1902 the Methodist evangelist Yun Jeong-il came to Jumundo-ri on this island to spread the gospel, and in 1905 the church and its congregation joined together to establish Yeongsaeng School, fostering national consciousness; in 1923 the congregation's donations funded the construction of this new church building. In 1978 the church was renamed from Jumun Church to Seodo Jungang Church, the name it retains today. The roof is a hip-and-gable roof, forming the shape of the Chinese character for "eight" (八) when viewed from the side, and the building has single eaves. The interior follows the style of early medieval Western churches, though in a very simplified form, consisting of a narrow nave and aisles used as the worship hall, with a pulpit at the centre. It is highly significant as a Western-style church built using the structural framework of traditional Korean timber construction.
