Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA hyanggyo is a local Confucian school established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages, and to educate and morally instruct the people of the region. Jinan Hyanggyo was first built in 1414, the 14th year of King Taejong of Joseon, at Utsaetgol in Gunsang-ri, but it burned down during the Japanese invasions of 1592–98 and was rebuilt in 1601, the 34th year of King Seonjo. It was moved to its present site and rebuilt again in 1636, the 14th year of King Injo. The surviving buildings include Daeseongjeon Hall along with Myeongnyundang Hall, a dormitory, Hyangandang Hall, Sajikgo storehouse, and the outer and inner three-bay gates. Daeseongjeon is where memorial rites are held for Confucius and for Confucian scholars of China and Korea, whose spirit tablets are enshrined there. It measures three kan across the front and two kan to the side, and its roof is a gable roof shaped like the Chinese character for "person" (人) when viewed from the side. During the Joseon period the school received land, slaves and books from the state to teach students, but today it no longer serves an educational function, retaining only its function as a site of memorial rites.
