Ungsusa Temple is said to have been founded by Kim Dae-seong before he built Bulguksa Temple in 751, the 10th year of King Gyeongdeok. Kim Dae-seong, who loved hunting, once climbed Tohamsan Mountain, killed a bear, and afterwards stayed in a village at the foot of the mountain. That night he dreamed that the bear's spirit appeared to him, vowing to be reborn and take revenge, and, frightened, he begged for forgiveness. Afterwards, to console the bear's vengeful spirit, he is said to have built Ungsusa Temple on the spot where he had caught the bear, and Jangsusa Temple at the place where he had had the dream. This Buddha statue, originally broken in two, was kept at Seokguram Grotto until it was moved to the Gyeongju National Museum in 1992.
