Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis seodang (village Confucian school) was built to honour Toegye Yi Hwang (1501–1570) and Ubok Jeong Gyeong-se (1563–1633). The exact date of its first construction is unknown, but since this is said to be the place where Yi Hwang and Jeong Gyeong-se once gave lectures, it is presumed to date from the 1500s. In 1690, the 16th year of King Sukjong, a shrine was built behind the seodang and the complex was then called a seowon (Confucian academy). In 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong's reign, it was demolished under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing seowon, but in 1879, the 16th year of Gojong, only the lecture hall was rebuilt on the old seowon site and named Gosan Seodang. It was later repaired in 1964 and has remained in its present form since. It measures four kan across the front and two kan to the side, and the roof is a hip-and-gable roof, shaped like the Chinese character for "eight" (八) when seen from the side. A stele commemorating the lectures of Yi Hwang and Jeong Gyeong-se now stands on the site of the former shrine.
